Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events and permanent SAFE Collection Centers take all batteries. Many hardware and electronics stores (Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, Staples) have front-of-store bins for rechargeable and lithium-ion batteries.

Safety first

Put a piece of clear/duct tape over the terminals (the +/− ends), especially on 9V and lithium batteries, and store them in a non-conductive container (plastic, cardboard, glass) until drop-off.
