Can you recycle k-cups?

K-Cups and most single-serve coffee pods are not recyclable in LA County curbside recycling. Each pod is a mix of a small plastic cup, an aluminum foil lid, a paper filter, and wet grounds — the sorting line can't separate them, and anything under ~4 inches falls through anyway.

What to do

Put used pods in the black landfill cart. If you want to do better, empty the grounds into your green organics cart (or compost) and recycle the cardboard box the pods came in — that part is real recycling.

“Recyclable” #5 pods

Some newer pods are stamped recyclable #5 polypropylene, but only if you peel off the foil lid, dump the grounds, and remove the filter — and even then they're too small for most curbside sorters. In practice they're trash in LA County unless you use the brand's own mail-back bag.

Reusable is the real fix

A refillable stainless pod eliminates the waste entirely and is cheaper over time — worth it if you brew daily.
